New Morrowind Expansion Coming to Elder Scrolls Online, Pricing and Release Date Announced

New Morrowind Expansion Coming to Elder Scrolls Online, Pricing and Release Date Announced

Earlier today on Bethesda’s Twitch channel, Zenimax Online Studios announced a new expansion to its flagship MMO, titled The Elder Scrolls Online: Morrowind, launching worldwide on PC, PS4, and Xbox One on June 6, 2017. The expansion will take players to areas series veterans will know but we have not yet seen in ESO, such as Vvardenfell, Seyda Neen, Bhalmora, a growing Vivec City, and more. You can view the announcement trailer below.

The Elder Scrolls Online: Morrowind takes place roughly 700 years before the events of The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind and will include a new class, the Warden—the first new class addition to ESO since its original release in April 2014. The Warden will utilize “nature-based magic” and will include a summonable bear the player can call upon in battle. The expansion will also include a new PVP mode, Battlegrounds, which will pit three teams of four against each other across three different maps.

To put into perspective how much the team at ZOS cares about this expansion: Rich Lambert, creative director at ZOS, said that the development team has gone to “great lengths” to preserve the integrity of the original look and feel of Morrowind as seen in TES III. He even mentioned that the team took the height map from TES III’s Morrowind and fit it to scale the scope and timeframe ZOS has to work with—and it will still be the largest zone in the game to date. Lambert also notes the new expansion packs 30+ hours of content for players to explore and quest through, including a brand-new, game-opening tutorial specifically for Morrowind.

The pricing breaks down like this:

  • $99.99 USD Physical Collector’s Edition – Discovery Pack, all premium edition digital content*, and real-world collectibles, including Naryu’s Journal, a Dwarven Colossus statue, a map of Morrowind, an exclusive steelbook, and a physical copy of the game
  • (Price TBD) Digital Collector’s Edition – Discovery Pack, all premium edition digital content*, and a digital copy of the game
  • (Price TBD) Digital Collector’s Edition Upgrade – Discovery Pack and all premium edition digital content* (no copy of the original game)
  • $59.99 USD Standard Edition – physical copy of the game
  • $39.99 USD Morrowind Upgrade – digital upgrade of Morrowind (for those who already own the base game)
* Premium edition digital content includes an exclusive War Bear, Armored War Horse, Dwarven Spider pet, Morag Tong armor convertor, and exclusive character emotes.

Today’s stream said nothing of whether or not Morrowind will be included for ESO Plus subscribers like all previous content additions have been in the past, so unless ZOS clarifies this down the road, it looks like current ESO players will have to shell out at least $40 USD to be able to access this expansion.

Given this large expansion, the addition of a new class (finally!), and that there will be 30+ hours of content to explore, I am very excited for this new expansion to hit. To me, the pricing is a bit steep, especially if it’s true that ESO Plus subscribers will be left out and will indeed have to pay extra to access the new content. I am not currently subscribed to Plus, but it’s how I’ve been able to access all DLC thus far. Losing that ability for Morrowind leaves me skeptical about the pricing structure, but let’s face it…I’ll probably end up getting it anyway.
